Strong winter gusts caused walls to collapse upon flimsy shelters housing people uprooted by conflict in Gaza, killing no fewer than four individuals. This tragedy highlights the dangerous living conditions that persist after over two years of devastating bombardment and critical lack of aid.

Truce Provides No Respite from Severe Elements

While a ceasefire has been active from October, humanitarian organizations state that residents do not have the adequate housing required to survive recurring cold-weather events.

Officials at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, said on Tuesday that the deceased were a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has enabled us to witness death in all its forms," said a family member after the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per the medical center, three people of a single family — 72-year-old a man, his teenage relative, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an eight-metre high wall collapsed onto their dwelling in a area near the sea of Gaza City. At least 5 additional people were injured in the incident.

Family members on that day started clearing the rubble that had buried their family and reconstructing the tent shelters for survivors.

Humanitarian Efforts and Ongoing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were handing out shelter kits, tarps, blankets and clothing as well as food and hygiene supplies across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of Palestinians reside in improvised tents because their houses were turned into rubble during the war. Humanitarian organizations contend not enough shelter materials are reaching Gaza during the ceasefire.

Casualty Numbers After the Truce

The Gaza health ministry, part of the administration, says more than four hundred and forty individuals have been killed by Israeli fire and their remains taken to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The ministry maintains detailed fatality records that are considered largely accurate by international bodies and outside analysts.

James Elder, representing the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on that day that at least 100 children below eighteen years old – sixty boys and 40 females – had been killed since the ceasefire started due to military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, tank shelling and use of live ammunition. These numbers, he said, reflected cases where enough information had been compiled to justify recording, but the overall count is expected to be higher. He noted that hundreds of minors had been wounded.

"Although 'explosions and gunfire have slowed' during the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told journalists at a press conference in Geneva by video from Gaza City. "Therefore what the world now calls calm would be viewed as a crisis in any other place," he said.

Third Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than two million people has been fighting to fend off the freezing temperatures and bad weather at bay while facing lack of assistance and a lack of more substantial temporary housing, which is badly needed throughout the colder season. This marks the 3rd winter since the war involving Israel and the group started on a date in late 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and murdered around 1,200 people and abducted two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

The local health authority says over seventy-one thousand four hundred Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory offensive.
