Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to be back in the country and looking forward to competing during the Australian summer," Williams said. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Williams' career statistics at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

Officials pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to compete in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
