UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman harboring several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
