Taliban Utilized Discarded UK Gear to Find Afghans Who Worked With Allied Troops, Inquiry Is Told

A whistleblower has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities abandoned sensitive technology allowing the militant group to identify Afghans who worked with allied troops.

Data Breach Endangers Numerous at Risk

Person A, known as Person A, testified that Afghans affected by the security lapse were instructed to relocate and change their contact details to avoid detection from the Taliban.

MPs are looking into the UK government's handling of a serious leak of confidential data affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had applied to come to Britain to flee the Taliban.

Data Disclosure Happened

A spreadsheet including private information, including names, addresses and occasionally household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member employed at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The breach became known months later, when details of several individuals who had sought to move to Britain appeared on online platforms.

Regime's Resources

Many believe there's a false assumption that the Taliban lack similar capabilities that allied forces use,” Person A informed MPs.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Once they acquire a contact number, they can trace you down to within metres. This is exactly how intelligence groups accomplished.”

During testimony about if militant forces had access to necessary encryption, the source confirmed: “They have complete capability.”

Aftermath of the Data Breach

Preliminary research provided to the committee suggested that at least 49 relatives and associates of people concerned by the leak had been executed.

A superinjunction about the breach was enacted in last year and prevented all details concerning it from media reporting until recently.

Safety Measures

Due to legal constraints, the source and the volunteer organization she collaborated with informed affected households they were supporting that they had “suspicions that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved when possible and changed their mobile numbers. That constituted the two main details that, if authorities obtained this information, would lead to identification and capture,” she said.

Contested Findings

The source argued that internal investigation performed by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to determine that the obtaining of the records by the Taliban was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are not confronting the authorities; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

Person A described disturbing violence endured by concerned people, comprising electrocution, simulated drowning, and violent assaults.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had bones crushed to pressure relatives to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
