American flight controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official informed Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays caused by weather and other issues.

"I am seeing the stress," he remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns directly.
