Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.

A freshly coined acronym came to light a few months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to medical experts like paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for physicians to treat a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of young amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in scores of doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government rejects these allegations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from competing in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that global media are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

Eurovision turns 70 next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A contest that was originally built on peace has devolved into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
