Champions League Fixtures Tonight: Chelsea v Barcelona & Additional Games

Greetings to a fresh evening of exciting Champions League football. 9 fixtures are set for tonight, with three British clubs in action. Chelsea face Barça in the standout fixture of the night, whilst The Magpies visit the French side and City host Leverkusen.

League Table

We're at the halfway stage of the league stage, so the table is taking form. All six English clubs are presently in the upper twelve, but there are only 2 pts between fifth and sixteenth place, thus there's a sense of volatility about the whole thing. All remains open.

  • Benfica lead Ajax 1-0 (17:45)
  • Union SG and Galatasaray level at 0-0 (17:45)

Past Meetings

The only previous meeting between Marseille and Newcastle was the Uefa Cup semi-final of 2003-04, claimed by an emerging star from Côte d'Ivoire. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have not faced each other previously. Barcelona and Chelsea have a peedie bit of history.

Early Match Updates

Just one goal during the opening period of the two early games. Dahl's 6th-minute goal has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a 1-0 lead at the Dutch side.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Although Newcastle traveled to the south of France fresh from their restorative 2-1 home Premier League win against Manchester City on Saturday, and having defeated Union SG, the Portuguese side and Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League, their only on the road win since early April came in the Belgian capital at Union Saint-Gilloise.

It's not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to talk about the mental side of this away form issue. “The European Cup is different to domestic games,” said the manager, whose team are sixth in the Champions League standings, with 9 pts from a possible twelve and automatic qualification to the knockout phase nearly secured. “I don’t know if you can draw parallels between them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Scott Murray, the minute-by-minute version of Maradona is on duty for that.
