Three members of law enforcement perished and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property near Verona to enforce an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and another man who escaped subsequent to the incident was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The detonation could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the location showed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accrued by the three owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings triggered the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief the police commander stated to news outlets.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He was convinced the explosion had taken place on a floor above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he said members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents informed reporters, noting that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
